Great Guitar Solos: Duane Allman, Stormy Monday

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Other Tags: Duane Allman, Stormy Monday, Guitar Solo
I'm not going to try to make a list of great guitar solos. It's been done all too often, and it's extremely difficult to come up with any kind of objective criteria for deciding whether or not a guitar solo is "great" in some sense. What I will do is, from time to time, share some solos that I think people should listen to, but I'll also endeavor to tell you why I think you should listen to it. One of the things that makes for a great solo, guitar or otherwise, is whe... MORE

The Allman Brothers BandNissan Pavilion – Bristow, VAAugust 14, 2007 – 6:30 PMSupporting Act – Bob Weir & Ratdog Last night was absolutely mind-blowing, and the current state of my brain _definitely_ confirms that. I still have a smile on my face (and grass stains on my feet) even though I’m at work and running on few hours of sleep + lots of coffee. The performance (and the whole experience) exceeded all of my expectations. The weather was picture perfect, the lawn w... MORE

At The Fillmore East

(55)
Blog post image preview In an interview, Duane told listeners how to tell who played what: Eric played the Fender parts and Duane played the Gibson parts. He continued by noting that the Fender had a sparklier sound, while the Gibson produced more of a "full-tilt screech." The Allman Brothers went on to record At Fillmore East, one of the great live rock albums, in March, 1971.

The Allman Brothers

Artist:
Album:
Track: Statesboro Blues (unreleased)
(31)
The limits of full-time session playing frustrated Allman. The few months in Muscle Shoals were by no means a waste, however, because besides meeting the great artists and other industry professionals he was working with, Allman had rented a small, secluded cabin on a lake and spent many solitary hours there refining his playing. Perhaps most significantly, at F.A.M.E. Allman got together with R&B and jazz drummer Jaimoe Johanson, who came there to meet Allman at the urgin... MORE

(11)
Blog post image preview Los Angeles (E! Online) - The Allman Brothers Band has announced it will postpone its traditional batch of shows at New York's Beacon Theatre, along with a few other spring gigs, to give multi-instrumentalist frontman Gregg Allman time to recover from treatment he's receiving for heptatitis C. "Almond" Brothers playing Newport Folk Fest this weekend

So the play on words is just a dig on some moron selling tickets on Craigslist But the Allman's are indeed performing a full set at the legendary Newport Folk Festival this Saturday, and yours truly will be indulging in that shit all DAY. Not only the boys, but the North Mississippi All Stars, John Butler Trio, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Assembly Of Dust, Tom Morello, and a bunch of Wainwrights. I hate the rain in the summer. Well at least when I have tickets for Jones Beach. Some people like outdoor venues. I hate them on nights like this. It was cold and wet. At least the show was smokin' hot. This was the first time I saw Ratdog. In the post Dead era, I have tended to be a Phil Phan, but this Ratdog show will lead me to spread the bucks around a bit more. They were very good and, I thought, very tight. Kimock was great on guitar, Bobby sounded good. ... MORE

Just in Case You Missed It

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Other Tags: Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes
A lot has been said, and gets repeated, about the classic ABB tunes, even regarding the more recent performances. Dreams, Whippin' Post, Statesboro Blues, Elizabeth Reed...the list is long, and the songs are all worthwhile. But The High Cost of Low Living is easy to pass over. The composition is mundane, and the lyrics are almost cheesy ("The high cost of low living, 'bound to put you six feet in the ground"). There's little about the song itself that sets it apart fr... "The Allman Brothers Experience"

(83)
It was a nice Sunday afternoon, a perfect day for a concert. I left out of my town and headed down to Virginia Beach, the traffic wasn't very bad surprisingly. When we arrived at the amphitheater, we got our parking spot and just chilled for a while, just hanging out on our lawn chairs. As the bicycle cops did their rounds one finally made its way over to us and told us that we couldn't tailgate, so we had to pack up the chairs and food. After that we just headed insid... MORE
