Saturday I headed up I-35 with my pal jake and jake's pal heath to see Sunset Rubdown in Denton. I had not heard them before that day, and to be quite honest, I only tagged along for the free ride up so i could see a friend. I am glad i went though, their set was really great and I am now proud to say I am a fan. Plus, that little lady who plays all the random stuff, is adorable and has splendid dimples. If you ever get the chance to see them live, i highly recommend i... MORE
Wit in music. Not in lyrics, which is easy enough - but in the way one chord leads to another, or a melody appears, or pauses are used. It's a rare phenomenon: one found in the work of classical composers such as Handel and Haydn, say. A (rather more modern) witty album, in my opinion, is Weezer's _Pinkerton_ (leagues better than anything else by the band) - and Sunset Rubdown's _Random Spirit Lover_ reminds me, in some ways, of that record. To start off by comparing Sun... MORE
Sunset Rubdown-Random Spirit Lover: full album review sometime before next friday, promise. Maybe if I'm feeling up to it another on the new (so far, quite underwhelming) St... MORE
You know where in the first few seasons of the Gilmour Girls Rory and whats his name are constantly in a fight? Well, James and I are a bit like that - not that we mean to. I mean, fundamentally, we are best friends. It is just that try as we might, we can't spend more than 24 hours in each others company. Anyway, sometimes, when we don't fight about: a) classifying music (yesterday I told him I tagged Ani DeFranco as rock music just to annoy him) b) Whether scienc... MORE

I haven't been able to listen to anything except Random Spirit Lover these past few days. The music is less accessible than that of Wolf Parade, more unattainable and open to interpretation, and I think that allure is part of the reason I've grown so attached. The songs are stories. Shut Up I Am Dreaming spun tales of horses, snakes, dreams, kids who need rides... Random Spirit Lover is a bit different, but the songs from horses' point of views are definitely still there... MORE
Sunset Rubdown (AKA my lover, if they were not a band of four individuals but instead one individual girl) did one of these sessions and I love it very very much. They play a song ("Winged/Wicked Things")... MORE
Sunset Rubdown is the other band of Wolf Parade member Spencer Krug. While Sunset Rubdown may not have the instant accessibility of Wolf Parade, the band certainly points to the talent that Krug certainly possesses. In my opinion Shut Up I Am Dreaming is a remarkable achievement for Krug and his bandmates. BUT what i'm interested is Krug has taken himself into elite songwriter territory which i wish i could be. Can I lift my dress up for you?Can I lift it in the night?... MORE

Cataract Camp (I hope I have the name right): Alright. 14 years ago I probably would've been really into them. Parts of songs were good but overall they're just not a style I listen to much these days. Seemed to abuse their instruments more than actually play them. Beaver: Couldn't hear enough to form an opinion. Totally wrong venue...acoustic guitar and a soft voice, and despite pleas from him nobody'd shut up. I was near the front but could hear all the godawful... MORE
