I was reading Sam's post about what was going on in his life, and I think we've all been feeling the heaviness of the universe as of late so in Sam's honor I offer the start of yet another rousing game of Wormhole!, this one might be a little tougher to bring to the surface, but I have faith in all of you. All though there isn't a scoring system yet, I offer an extra 20 points to whoever assists Sam in bringing it to the surface (baring he has the time to play). So here... MORE
Brazilian psych-rockers Os Mutantes (The Mutants) will play on US soil again this summer. The recently reunited trio, brothers Arnaldo (bass, keyboards) and Sergio (guitar) Baptista and singer Zelia Duncan (who replaced original vocalist Rita Lee), toured last summer and will hit four major US cities this summer, making for only their second trip to the U.S. since forming in the 60’s. It would have been Os Mutantes third trip if they hadn’t turned down Kurt Cobain’s offer ... MORE
How can you explain the music of the 60's and 70's in Brazil? My parents lived through it and survived the dictatorship. Many of my friends relatives didn't because they decided to fight against it, live a different lifestyle or listen to censored 'subversive' music. This video shows a bit of those odd times. I hope this project gets launched since I'm fascinated with that time period in Brazil. Especially the musical aspect of it. When every song had to be... MORE
Saw the band Os Mutantes a couple of weeks ago in NYC-- it was their first concert ever in US The concert started with a mixture of mild excitement and skeptism.especially from the Brazilians in the crowd.. Zelia Duncan was thewoman who replaced Rita Lee.. Rita Lee became a huge but somewhatcheesey star in Brazil after Mutantes -Zelia Duncan is a well knownbrazilian singer who style did seem to fit the Mutantes. One top ofthat yesterday Rita Lee finally broke her silence... MORE
Os Mutantes. What interesting songs. What great dynamics. It's nice to listen to it as background music actually, because the Portugese is less distracting. Just the beautiful melodies and variations come out as a pure musical experience. That first song... WOW!
And I hear all the Os Mutantes albums have now been re-released. Kind of makes me sad that I paid $30 for it when it was out of print.
Warning: poor audio quality alert
Between seeing this and reminiscing over Sesame Street, I have to wonder: where has the imagination gone?
(More likely that I simply grew up and became a cynical old crab. But, hell, there's got to be a better answer than that.)
I am going to check them out at the Hollywood Bowl this weekend. I am really looking forwrard to it. And for anybody who is not clear about it, Rita has not had anything to do with the Mutantes for over 30 years. But if you listen to the early records before Rita went solo (and even Rita's first few solo records on which Sergio, Arnaldo and Liminha played,) Rita's vocals were definitely cool but it was the band's musicianship and Duprat's arrangements that killed it. So ev... MORE
Just my luck.
they'll be playing in Chicago and I might have to leave the show early and miss their set.
What a shame.
I've seen Rita Lee tons of times, but I've never seen them play together.
They have influenced so many Brazilian artists I love. I remember playing Rita's albums as a kid and jumping on my parents bed.
