Blog post image preview I have loved Zooey Deschanel since her small but memorable part in Almost Famous, her voice a great surprise in the Jon Favreau film Elf. Here is a track with her and M.Ward. A collaboration that began during filming will be released under She and Him expected this spring, "I was doing a film called 'The Go-Getter,' and M. Ward was doing the soundtrack and the director Martin Hynes he wanted us to do a duet together and we met doing that and had so much fun, that M. as... MORE

I did not have the bucks to continually delve into the new records of 2007. So here are just a few thoughts. I did not have any singular compelling dance or electronic record strike me, which was disappointing. That might explain my increasing fondness for reggae and dub, it was the best place to get that melody and rhythm fix. So obviously without much good electronic I listened to a lot of rock and roll too. One big disappointment for me was the new Ponys' record, i... MORE

Slowly sorting through the cache of single tracks I've picked up free over the past few months from Paste and Emusic and looking into the artists and albums. Love this song and am eager to download more, starting with the title track "Postwar."

It's rare for me to stumble across songs that I like on first hearing. But I woke to this song on my clock radio the other day, and dug it straight away; lyrically and musically. Here's the live version: I've since got the album, and it's a gem.

Blog post image preview Yet another song that I must listen to on repeat because it's too short to listen to just once. I mean, just when I feelin' the song it's over :( Yeah, M. Ward is a great musician and Post-War is an awesome album.

Infatuation and Greener Grass

I'm nuts about M. Ward. He's full of surprises and has a shmorgasbord of musical styles, crafty stories, layered lyrics, instrumentals galore, and classiness to spare. His voice is like a beautiful raspy violin, ranging passionately between soaring sweetness and gravel-y despair. There's piano, jangley guitar, driving steel resonator, strings, woodwinds, kettle drums, cricket sounds, and god-knows-what-else. I hear Louis Armstrong, Sam Cooke, Tom Waits, Paul Simon, RL Burn... I know there are still a few days left in 2006, and maybe I'll hear something in the next 2 days that will change my list (I should probably wait until April to post this list so the dust can settle and the fat can rise to the top and all). But as of today, here are my top 10 albums of 2006. 1. M. Ward – Post-War2. Josh Ritter – The Animal Years 3. Neko Case – Fox Confessor Brings the Flood4. Flaming Lips – At War with the Mystics5. Johnny Cash – American V: A Hundred Hi... MORE

It was a grand weekend in the San Francisco clubs for this particular music freak (And no, I’m not talking about the sold-out Slim’s show by rising “American Idol” also-ran Chris Daughtry and his band, whose overly-earnest vocals and pre-fab populist hard-rock sound are as tiresome and played-out as pop clichés can be.) The true sonic splendor came by way of two marvelous acts: of Montreal and M. Ward. First, I hit the Great American Music Hall and caught the Friday gig ... MORE

I'd be hard pressed to think of another music video I've seen that I've enjoyed more than M. Ward's video for Chinese Translation. Just perfect. Yes, the song does lend itself to an somewhat easy idea...just illustrating and animating the lyrics to the song. But the execution is just stellar. This is the reason why music videos were invented.
