Album Review: Circular Sounds by Kelly Stoltz

(21)
Blog post image preview Rating: 8.4Summary: Like having dinner at your mother's house...nothing new or experimental, but damn if she doesn't make the world's best meatloaf. For all of those cranks out there that complainin' that they don't make music like they used too...all I can say is you just aren't listening hard enough. Case in point: Kelley Stoltz's newest album Circular Sounds. As faded, warm, and friendly as an old photo hanging in a mahogany frame, Stoltz's music rummages thro... MORE

Kelley Stoltz's "Circular Sounds"

(24)
One of my very favorite songwriters, Kelley Stoltz, has a new album out on Sub Pop next month called Circular Sounds and it seems certain to fall somewhere in my top ten for 2008. Here’s my review, which runs in Harp this month. Kelley StoltzCircular Sounds (Sub Pop) After flirting with the piano in 2006’s Below the Branches, San Francisco’s Kelley Stoltz has returned to the fuzzy glories of 1960s guitar. His fourth full-length layers a psychedelic haze over songs that ... MORE

Blog post image preview I'm sure the question has all the intrigue of "who is this R.E.M.?" to so many of you culture vulture types, but seriously... Who is this Kelley Stoltz? All I know is that I keep hearing Really nice things about him, and more important, keep perking up my ears when WFMU sneaks him on to a playlist. He's building an impressive track record of "Oh! It's him again!" moments here at the AA Coppertop treehouse. HERE'S a post from FMU's Beware of the Blog, posted well... MORE

Live Review: The Essex Green / Kelley Stoltz

Artist:
Other Tags: The Essex Green
Blog post image preview The best thing about Spaceland in Silver Lake, California is that it really is in a land all its own. It is not possible for an up-and-coming indie band to play Los Angeles without gracing its iconic stage. That said, The Essex Green and Kelley Stoltz were a smart musical pairing for the venue. The two acts played well-crafted music that delivered both a pop and jazz fix.
On record, indie veterans The Essex Green have the same dark, blues undertones as fellow Brooklyn outfi... MORE

Top 25

Artist:
Album: Beneath the Branches
For what it's worth (not much), I just put together my top 10 list for Harp, and of course, I couldn't get it down to ten. Here are my 25 favorite records for this year with the usual caveats. a) I haven't heard everything (Joanna Newsom, Hold Steady). b) There are a handful of really good records that I haven't spent enough time with (Roots, Decemberists, TV on the Radio, Yo La Tengo). c) I will probably change my mind or remember another one by the end of the day.... Saturday 08.19.06, Make-Out Room: Kelley Stoltz Scrabbel I didn't actually make it over to hear Kelley and Scrabbel, as I was in the midst of epic and glorious wedding banquetude and no way I was going to abandon my friends nor the honey-glazed sea bass. If you went you should tell me how awesome it was though.

Kelley Stoltz Video Podcast

Free music video of Memory Collector (3)
Blog post image preview I'm posting these a bit out of order - Kelley Stoltz was the subject of my fourth video podcast, however he was one of the first ones I ever shot. I noticed his album at number one on the best of the year list from fellow mogger Jenny, so I felt inspired to post it. In case you didn't know, Stoltz's third release - Below the Branches (Sub Pop, 2006) reflects the influences both of his childhood heroes and the obscure classic sounds to be found at Grooves - the record sho...
