Chad VanGaalen - Soft Airplane

Artist:

Artist: Chad VanGaalen Album: Soft Airplane File Under: Indie Rock Recommended if You Like: Neil Young, Beck Featured Track: Willow Tree I once heard Chad VanGaalen described as the schizophrenic son of Neil Young. And that completely made sense to me.  The comparisons to Neil Young are obvious artistically and personally. Both are famously recluse and seem to favor the self-sufficiency of [...]

I wonder what it is about Canadian artists that continue to exude massive appeal to my ears. Among my favorites of the past decade, I count names like Julie Doiron, Joel Plaskett, Leslie Feist, A-Trak, Chromeo, and too many more to name off the top of my head. In a group of names like [...]

New Wax

It's the albums that require multiple listens that usually yield the most reward. I'm on my tenth rotation of Chad VanGaalen's new album Soft Airplane and while I'd hesitate to say I've completely wrapped my head around the material, I'm going to give this review a (most likely insufficient) attempt. Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, VanGaalen is a freakishly talented person. In addition to his impressive work as a musician, he's also a highly regarded illustra... MORE

A few weeks back, I posted a video of a young, glorious Chad VanGaalen doing a stupid human trick on Letterman, in which another dude crawled on him . Chad himself -- or an anonymous commenter who wrote, "It's Chad," which is good enough for me -- chimed in over the weekend and sorta explained how he ended up being a human totem pole.

"It was the night of the Grammys and Cher was the headliner on the show," he wrote, noting, "this goes way back, before Infiniheart . Bu... MORE

Hey another week in the books. Here are all the posts and reviews from the last week: Jess reviewed American Dollar’s A Memory Stream for your weekly fix of post-rock. Chad VanGaalen’s album Soft Airplane is awesome. Tons of feedback disagreement for giving the album a 4.25 out of 5… Was I too harsh? Coko profiled Cori Green [...]

Blog post image preview While I was looking around Mog for the first time in a long time, I noticed all the year-end rankings, and couldn't resist making my own list. Thanks to the Smart Playlist feature (quite handy) I discovered the 2006 songs that I listened to the most this year. They are as follows: 1.) Chad VanGaalen-Red Hot Drops This isn't too surprising. I played the heck out of this song. There's something so sweet about it, and the rhythm is simple but catchy. It's soft and quiet and... MORE

Blog post image preview Now that The Klaxons have won the Nationwide Mercury Prize, we can all turn our attention to the 2007 Polaris Music Prize! "A $20,000 prize for a full-length Canadian album, judged solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre or record sales." You may remember that Final Fantasy (aka Owen Pallett) was the inaugural winner last year for his album "He Poos Clouds," which was recorded on a budget of $8000. He was up against higher profile acts like The New Pornog... MORE

chad vangaalen is a cool cat. he’s like a young bob pollard. actually he’s really nothing like uncle bob except that they both have a penchant for recording on 4 tracks or other random analog equipment and crafting strangely hummable pop songs. case in point, chad’s new record, soft airplane, was recorded primarily on an [...] ~~
