I'm recovering from the end of year picnic and mom announces that its time for a family walk.  Dressed, leashes on, find a Jawbreaker record (DGC first pressing/colored vinyl) and a Lenny Bruce box that Rhino released in the 90s that are gathering dust, and off we go.  Get to Amoeba get $25 credit and grab "Real Animal."  A lot of good songs:  Smoke, Sensitive Boys (Is this Young Americans) Nuns Song (remember Hate Holiday?  Great San Francisco band from the early 90s, Marcy was the lead singer, she worked at Villains, would not let me put their record out), I Got It Right.  I highly recommend this album and you can download the song Always A Friend by clicking here.

Father's Day comes once a year and this year was no exception, a lot of activity in the name of the old man. Headed out with the girls and saw friends with a big picnic blanket, "where you headed?" I cried, "to Stern Grove to see Booker T Jones" they replied. After the morning activities we headed to Stern Grove. Parking happened without a hitch and away we went with the meatball subs that joined us along the way."Ladies & gentlemen Betty LaVette" what?! I love this lady and the album, "I've Got My Own Hell To Raise" she did not disappoint a real funky set with all the trimmings! All the hits and then most of the Joe Henry produced piece a solid soul time.

The only thing for sure was theat there was a whole lot of soul in the bowl as Mr. Robinson says.

In the late 90's my friend Stu called and said that Jimmy McGriff was playing at the Fairmont Hotel's now defunct Oak Room. He was in fantastic form with Zig Modeliste on drums which took the whole gig to a not-so-traditional level. The songs were extended jams that had Jimmy and Zig working in and out of different syncopation rhythms. The gig was nothing like I expected and took me to the intersection of Philadelphia and New Orleans; a strange and magical place where the groove is deep and warm. Finally, as if the night needed any more juice, and after the last note from the leslie died down, patrons were given Jimmy McGriff branded letter openers. I never received a letter from Jimmy, but he opened my heart.
