Ahhhh...charming drunkenness at its very best. Last nights show, or "rock and roll concert" as Adams enjoyed reminding the audience of, was surprisingly… extremely entertaining. And I don’t mean I wasn’t expecting a good show, but Adam’s shows have been known to vary; from over the top rudeness and tired rants throughout a show to sweet and innocent like demeanor throughout a set (just read some pitchfork reviews, if you trust those guys, but they have an obvious bias; I have a love hate relationship with them, mostly love). Ryan Adams and the Cardinals played two sets, around three hours long. In total I don’t know how many songs that was but likely over 20... which I usually would never go for, but he had a childlike (in a good way) approach to the show and his interaction with the crowd was pretty great, clean songs (playing wise), they appeared to enjoy every minute, so it made for a nice evening to see musicians/artists having fun; non pretentious fun. He made the expected references to living in LA and the streets, but even that was well received and helped create a more intimate like atmosphere through the evening. Music: he played a lot of great songs “Goodnight Hollywood Blvd,” “Wonderwall,” “Why do they Leave?” But skipped on Sylvia Plath, LA Cienega Smiles, and a few others to my chagrin. Wonderwall was great, as expected…but with his Cardinals arrangement some of his earlier work like “rescue Blues,” “come pick me up” sounded different…I miss the banjo. I must say his voice has improved a lot over the years, he sounded amazing through both sets, hit high notes etc…his spazzy shimmies and such also helped entertain, as did the following rants: 1. His doctor visit for prescription glasses and how one of the lenses was upside down; he was secretly summoning the Children of the Corn throughout his visit. 2. The screen on his mobile phone being scratched and not being able to read a thing from text messages. A mock txt conversation with the crowed on his advice to not Paint the house Kelly Green 3. Inviting and pressuring Jon Graboff to share a joke…went like this, “I was walking down the street near my home in new york and some guy approaches me and says, “hey man, I have all your records, and now I want your TV and stereo.”

It was a great show. He seems really happy, and his band interaction is fantastic. I’ve been to so many good shows this past year but I can’t think of a band that appeared happier than Ryan Adams and the Cardinals did last night. Do what you can to catch him live; especially in this stage of his career, he was hilarious last night. The transitions between songs varied from smooth to not smooth when he decided to talk, but it was good. Very human.

He also played “Sarcophagus." heavy metal, he had the stance and everything, it was sweet. Hugs.

I was there and I posted a list of songs on my blog earlier. I think I got them all (except Why Do They Leave), if not in the right order. Here's the list:

Peaceful Valley Beautiful Sorta The Rescue Blues The Sun Also Sets Everybody Knows Elizabeth, You Were Born To Play That Part Oh My God, Whatever, Etc. Sarcophagus (improvised) Goodnight Rose Come Pick Me Up Oh My Sweet Carolina I See Monsters Wonderwall Please Do Not Let Me Go

Intermission

"Get Back In Your Seats" song (improvised) Mockingbird Dear Chicago Shakedown on 9th Street \ Off Broadway Rip Off A Kiss Before I Go Goodnight, Hollywood Blvd. Easy Plateau Bartering Lines Two

By my count, that's at least 23 official songs. Awesome show, eh?

I think it's safe to say that Portland is becoming one of the main hubs for the entire west coast.

right. I'm also not going out on a limb when i say most of us are initially drawn to it by way of musical inclinations. But it does feel different up there; welcoming...and its still affordable. Maybe I'll find something in east Portland to take me back there for good.

Cannon Beach is one of my fave Oregon coast towns. Make sure you check out Indian Beach which is in Ecola State Park at the north end of Cannon Beach, it's my fave beach on the Oregon Coast. Stunningly beautiful! You can check it out further here.

I don't know what's going on musically but I do know ya gotta eat! So Montage is a great french cajun restaurant that's been around forever and it's a very ecclectic atmosphere. Try the mussel or oyster shooters, yum! Their mac & cheese, red beans & rice & jambalaya are all good(as is most of the food). The lunch menu is very reasonable & the dinner menu is midpriced.

I was born & raised in the PDX metro area but have since moved to N. CA. Don't miss the rain but do miss a few things! Enjoy

My MOG family it is with great disappointment that I share with you some impressions of tonights show at Henry Fonda. Now mind you I am not the biggest Spoon fan, which in part had me a bit hopeful for a great show or something, ... i don't know, maybe i was secretly expecting some magic, desperately hanging on to some spark in side me that they would totally win me over. With that said it wasnt a bad show, but here are some things I wanted to see. oh...actually here is a pic taken from my terrible samsung blackjack camera first;

This is them in red light :) So this is what I didn't see: -Stage presence; they just sort of played -visual dynamics - again, they just sort of played...i think i once saw Britt sort of half swing his guitar away from him and strum for a sec but that was it. Not quite like a Shins show, but not what I expected either.

As you can tell I am quite fond of their set up on stage, just some rockers playing in front of simple lights, i actually really liked the simple spacious attributes this suggested.

Music: some of it sounded repetitive but I danced a but so it was ok. The set was a little too long...they must have played at least 15 songs...before the encore (i could be way off, but it sure felt like a lot). I didn't mind the Gimme Fiction songs, thats a great album. Easily my favorite moment was having the horns on stage, those guys were great, they smiled and moved and really enjoyed themselves while they played which leads me to this; I don't think Spoon was really being all that charming, not much interaction with the crowd, and unless you are "bringing it" with some really strong stage dynamics, at least tell a joke or two.

heres my fav photo in some weird "negative" format on my mobile telephone.

If any of you were at the show I hope you enjoyed more than I did...it really was just ok, i moved, spazzed a bit...oh, specially through "I turn my Camera On," which I totally enjoyed. Oh, and of course, I couldn't go more than 3 shows without someone spilling beer on my purcells, what the hell, sip an inch off the cup or something before you start walking through a crowd. Wolf Parade is tomorrow night down the street from my house at El Rey, i know, 2 shows in a row, I need to get my rest, do my push ups, eat my frutie pebbles...a review will follow. Hope to see some of you there.
