Marc Moulin, who passed away in 2008, was the top jazz musician in Belgium for 3 decades. Known best for his recent solo work and his association with Sparks and Telex, he never shied away from modernity, working with electronics from his early days as a leader and keyboard player for Placebo. The album, Ball of Eyes was released in '71, and has since become a sought after collectors item. An influence on crate digging hip hop producers and electronic musicians, he s... MORE

I lived in Dallas for a while and learned to love the city, but that's a whole different story. I don't really know why I started out with that, but anyway...When I was in Dallas, I met Robert Wilonsky, who at the time was the pop/entertainment editor for D Magazine and the Dallas Observer (music and film/ entertainment weekly newspaper.) We got to talking and I was picking his brain on recent interviews he'd conducted. I was completely intrigued especially when I found ... MORE
Something special for you today, Leonard Cohen reciting the lyrics to Sound of Silence in a tribute to Paul Simon. His elloquent rendition reminds me of a poem that Cohen wrote about silence, one of my favorites: Poem ("I heard of a man ...") from "Let Us Compare Mythologies" I heard of a man
who says words so beautifully
that if he only speaks their name
women give themselves to him.
If I am dumb beside your body
while silence blossoms like tumors on our lip... MORE
What is up with Led Zeppelin? In what is perhaps the most passive public argument ever, this week has been chalk full of web stories where Jimmy Page’s manager Peter Mensch "said this" and then he "said that." It’s hard to keep up.
BBC 6 Music
reports that Page is all for a reunion and bassist John Paul Jones and second generation drummer Jason Bonham "had a really good time rehearsing, the three of them, before Robert showed up." Ouch. He continued and said the band wo... MORE
OK, so I've totally bought into the Glasvegas deal. They're from Glascow, Scottland, which is cool, and more important, their debut self-titled album rides on variations of that "Be My Baby" beat (they even covered the old Phil Spector classic). This album opener pretty much tells the whole story. If you dig it you'll probably like the whole album.
For this Funky Friday, I have travelled to New Orleans in 1999, and my Tardis has locked in upon the Wild Magnolias, as they release their "Life Is A Carnival" CD. The Wild Magnolias history is fairly well documented here - deriving from a tribe of Mardi Gras Indians, they have been stalwarts of the New Orleans scene since the ealy 1970s, and have cut four great albums since their debut "They Call Us Wild", released round about 1975. Having Wilson "Willie Tee" Turbinton o... MORE

I've read numerous band bios over the years, but never have I come across one as moving as Stephen Wesley 's. Over a decade ago Wesley and some friends nearly went to trial for armed robbery. Instead, he offered himself up to take their punishment — eight years behind bars. During that time a prison chaplain noticed Wesley teaching himself guitar and singing along. The chaplain loved his voice, offering him a spot in his choir which traveled throughout the town.

I think I might have taken this way too far. I could have made a Top 5, 7, maybe 12. But I went through and tried to rank about 65 albums over the last 2 weeks... anyway, here's how it turned out. Of the albums I heard/purchased in 2008, I present to you my top 40:
40. The Mountain Goats – Heretic Pride 39. John Legend – Evolver 38. Murs – Murs For President 37. Okkervil River – The Stand-Ins 36. The Game – L.A.X. 35. The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound... MORE

At the Calexico show a couple weeks ago, the band threw a few lines from Bob Dylan's Silvio into the middle of "Victor Jara's Hands," turning the song a little sideways with a borrowed and entirely new vibe. It's a trick I've always liked - not exactly a cover song, but a bit of an homage. Calexico just borrowed the "Silvio" chorus, weaving it seamlessly with their own song. I've seen other
