MOG MOG

THE MUSIC BLOGGING NETWORK

(25)

I got this CD in the mail today, and I'm rather enjoying it. In the same family with The White Stripes and The Black Keys but not an identical twin to either of 'em. The second track of the album, "Sugar Cinnamon", is the one that's stayed in my head. I couldn't resist the keys, the drum lines, or the layered vocals.

Granted, I've only listened to the album twice through so my opinion is sure to change. But really, all of the songs are pretty engaging, despite being lyrically incoherent at times. The music is ripe with blues-infused riffage, which is always a step in the right direction. It's definitely done well here, very Sabbath & Zeppelin-esque at times but not too derivative. These guys have promise. I'm going to see them (in Harrisonburg believe it or not) on October 3, so I'll have to make the real judgment call then.

Thank you for the recommendation. Sugar Cinnamon is as yummy as sugar and cinnamon :) If the album as good as this song, I predict (looking at my indie crystal ball) a bright shiny road ahead of them. Have fun at the show, let us know how they were like.

the lyric "don't you squeal I know a pig when I sees one" makes me smile every time :) speaking of the live gig, these guys are touring with Rocky Votolato. Anyone familiar with his stuff?

That's a good line. When I just say it outloud I keep thinking of the hardcore Deftones line from adrenaline, forget the track title.

Can't say that I know Rocky, hope it's a sweet opener for you though.

Hey thanks.... I'm jealous of you because I'm sure they rock live! I just wish they'd come to Indy. I guess I've got a trip to Chicago in my near future. I'll put a Rocky Votolato song on my page if you want to check him out.

Hey - I'll mention to P.TM that they have a fan in Indy :) I've heard a few tracks off Rocky's myspace - kinda Jack Johnson-y I thought. I think The Great Depression is also playing tonight - I know nothing about them

Hey girl! Glad you like. I was shocked they ended up in the Burg myself, but they are from Alaska so I guess they're used to hillbilly surroundings heh. They were pretty good on stage, too...although the show started EARLY (the first time in history anything's started early at the Pub) so I missed most of it, which blows for more reason than one...

ah, the pub. i was always glad to know that no matter what time i showed up, i was barely missing anything. can't believe the show started early and you missed it, dude. that blows. it's like everything has gone haywire.
