MOG MOG

THE MUSIC BLOGGING NETWORK

While searching for a photo for my last post, I came across this video at http://musicology-101.com/ (a good source of new music, by the way).  The Teacher and The Student.  It kinda put things into perspective when Soulja Boy said that 50 Cent's "In Da Club" was old school for him.

Yeah.  Wow.

Now, I'm REALLY gon' fuck you up.  What's hip-hop going to be like in 10 years when SOULJA BOY is old school?  I get the shivers just thinking of what my daughter will be listening to.

lemme give you a preview.  Think "High School The Musical" + "Hannah Montana" + some sort of American Idol bastardization + lots of auto tune.

Kill me now.  That's the equivalent of Pearl Jam sitting down with the Jonas Brothers.

Hopefully Soulja Boy, and The Jonas Brothers won't be considered "old school" 10 years from now, so much as I hope they are considered "irrelavent".

I like KRS-One, he's like the Butros Butros Galle of Hip Hop.  He's so repectful and speaks about Hip Hop so well - really breaking things down.  If Hip Hop had a UN, I think he could be the head of it.

Wow.... umm.  I can't lie, I ain't even logged on since the strike a few month back.  Troy, your postings are always hurting and stretching my mind.  The points in the convo were salient, but I have to say, if KRS is going to head the UN of Hip Hop, duck!!!

I've seen this guy off and on for the past 15years on his so-called educational and cultural tours.  Kris is one of the most important rappers of his generation, and a big blow hard.  Imagine the same dude who beefed with Nelly (which Krs started by the way... a response to Nelly's hit song, Still #1), and talked about how he was "real" Hip-Hop for the latter part of the 90's, then went on to record with Puffy (his name wasn't Diddy yet youngins) on one of his last recordings for Jive.

I seen dude get into verbal and fist fights with scholars at Stanford, and with PM Dawn (talk about ol' school).  Kris was one of my heros, and in many ways the inspiration for my own career; but honestly, the ignorance Soulja Boy is spitting is really the next logical progression of a culture and people who lost themselves when we started shipping past gold!  I miss Rawkus.

LOS!  Where the hell have you been? Wow, I had forgotten about some of those KRS highlights.  PM Dawn stage-tossing was the best!  And, yeah, I bought the record where he closed with a remix by Puffy.  The What-the-fuck?!!?-ness of that moment still hasn't quite faded.

Contra: Yeah, KRS has somehow managed to remain the authority on all things hip-hop.  But, hip-hop still needs that dude to provide some sort of balance.  No matter how crazy he gets, he still made the ORIGINAL Blueprint (Yeah, Jay-Z, I'm looking at you).

But, really, when 50 Cent is your "old school", what can you really expect.  You can't expect a kid who grew up reading the Archie comics on bubble gum wrappers to grow up to be Stephen King.

Mac, I wonder if our parents had the same feeling of dread when wondering what we would listen to when we grew up.

Oooh you know what, i forgot that serious KRS gaff/duet with REM's "Radio Song"! What was he thinking!

I personally think Soulja Boys being smart in not going there, cuz you know hes get his ass handed to him.  What's the saying about people proving how ignorant they truely are by opening their mouth?

It's better to shut up and have people think that you're ignorant than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.  Or, something to that effect.

Never heard the REM track.

You didn't miss anything, not their shining moment.  I'm sure the intention was good, but, well you know...

wait, so does that make me old for not thinking that "In Da Club" is not old skool?

No, of course not, Charles. Not thinking "In Da Club" is old does not make you old.  BEING OLD makes you old. :p

Yes.  I know.  But, I felt like calling you Charles anyway.
