It's spring break. Thousands of kids have mashed themselves into a tiny makeshift arena to see one band.....Bush.
But it's raining.
Bush is not going to play in the rain. All the kids will go home disappointed. Except....one man, Gavin Rossdale, the man who is/was BUSH....plays.
In the rain.
Electric guitar and all, he plays, solo.
It is one of the more amazing rock videos I've ever seen. And it made me think.
Why? Why take a risk like that?
Forget the electrocution aspect....think about playing a wet electric guitar with wet fingers and rain in your eyes. What are the chances it doesn't just suck? Not only that, play your signature song, the one everyone recognizes and will KNOW when it's screwed up.
Why put yourself in that position?
The answer is really quite simple.
He didn't want to let the kids down. He felt a responsibility to people he didn't know to perform simply because they were there to see him do so. It wasn't obligation. No one pushes themselves to do things that are harmful or potentially harmful to themselves out of a sense of obligation.
This sense of responsibility stuff is pretty powerful. It pushes people to do more, be more, achieve more than they ever would have thought possible. Doesn't mean they are not scared out of their freakin minds sometimes(most of the time), doesn't mean that they don't have doubts (every damn day), doesn't mean that they don't sometimes (lotsa times) fail.
The difference is, they don't give up. They don't look up into the rain and think, "I'm through for the day."
They can't. Not as long as "the kids" are depending on them.
I love Evanescence. And not just because I can actually SPELL Evanescence. I love their music.
I love the goofy smiles Amy Lee gets when she's getting lots of attention.
I love the way emotion bleeds out of her soaring or growling voice whether she's laying on her back on top of a metal building wearing lace somethings on My Immortal
or swimming underwater with demons at a Detroit rock concert on "Going Under"
(has to be Detroit, only place I can think of that has enough demons to fill a concert hall).
I realize that by law you are supposed to be 19 or under to be a fan. Something about heavy metal riffs and young testosterone. I'm here to tell you that old guy testosterone works pretty well where Amy Lee is concerned, and I've been eating Heavy Metal Riffs for breakfast since I was 13.
Yes they sometimes come across as pretentious, yes they are a bit to much goth or emo or whatever the hell it's called nowadays when you wear black eyeliner and act bummed out all the time except when you're band plays.
Shit, I did all that. Isn't that what every 19 year old does? Ok .... I didn't wear black eyeliner. But I would have.....if it would have helped me get laid. Hell, I'd wear it today to that end....but I digress.
Songs that rock, a voice so powerful that you feel it beneath your skin, a uniquely sexy young woman....
things like this don't change the affect they have, regardless of the age of the person being affected. So I'm not going to feel embarrassed that I love Evanescence or for that matter Linkin Park , or Staind or Chevelle ...and on and on and on.
I am not delusional. I know that Ms. Amy Lee and I will never hook up. There's that age thingy....she's 25....too old for me. I'm planning for no older than say, 21, with 1 to 2 year relationships, die alone and leave my millions to my kids.

Music is a large part of my life, and has been as long as I can remember. I have around 100 vinyl albums that I held onto, maybe 50 CD's and an equal amount of CD mixes and over 4000 mp3's from around 1000 artists saved on my hard drive. But I also have two boys ages 10 and 8. Since I'll only let them listen to Rob Zombie about once a week, the song below is easily the overall favorite in the household.

Yes....The Doom Song....as both of my boys pointed out to me this evening. Now, which of us should be more embarrassed....me for not knowing the name, or you for knowing it.... :)
