The rumor mill is churning with reports that Phish and Bruce Springsteen will headline Bonnaroo this year.
It's an odd bill, granted, but Bonnaroo's been throwing changeups for a few years now. In particular, Phish manager Coran Capshaw's close ties to Superfly AC makes the Phish thing look like good business sense. Phish will certainly move tickets, and a lucrative plug-and-play-and-get-the-fuck-out situation is probably very appealing to a band whose last live musical act was a DIY festival that turned apocalyptic.
One way or the other, I'll be skipping Bonnaroo this summer and hope to get my Phish fix at Red Rocks.
Stumbled across this old Mississippi John Hurt video discussing and performing "Steel Driving Man." Pete Seeger is the interviewer.
I don't know anybody who can listen to MJH without being completely captivated. Not by his technique, which is entirely his and brilliant in its own right, but by the fact that each note rides from his guitar on a wave of soulful intention.
There is no better Sunday afternoon listening for my money, anywhere.

I don't know but it is damn fine.
Wow, that's some digging through Youtube to find this. Great post.
Seem the other folks there don't seem to related to laying railroad spikes.
His playing is fantastic for someone who probably didn't have any formal training -- just the feel.
Bruce Springsteen plays a version of this tune with the Seeger Sessions band which sounds great as well.
This song caught me unawares in the tent at Bonnaroo as I sat sidestage by myself, and I started to bawl uncontrollably. I hate it when music does this to me...and by "hate" I mean "really, really love."
Nothing fancy. Four chords in four time. One guitar. One voice singing simple truths. This is the essence of my obsession with music, right here.
Enjoy.

Sounds awesome but i can't see Phish doing a festival with other bands since they haven't ever done one before. Not sure i believe this rumor until i see it. Last year it was rumored that Led Zeppelin was going to be at Bonnaroo, that didn't happen.
I see Phish doing a stream of their own tour this summer and ending it off MSG for New Years then perhaps a 3 day festival of their own in some far off kick ass location.
Expect to see Phish doing a lot of things they haven't done before.
All of the band members have expressed a desire to do less work related to things besides the simple act of making music, and throwing their own festivals is a mountain of work. And you can imagine how traumatized they all still are after Coventry -- which from a financial perspective could have turned out far worse for them (it's a miracle they weren't sued class action).
Like I said, it's a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt.
True, pretty exciting to see what they're going to do next. I don't know how much longer i can wait to find out...Red Rocks is definitely on their list of things to do though, see you there!
