Andre Tanker (1941-2003) was a singer and composer from Trinidad and Tobago who began playing the steel drum as a child of seven, moving on to guitar and cuatro by his teenage years. Later he was influenced by Mongo Santamaria, and by the African styled percussion of the Orisha musicians. By 1973 he was writing a film score along with sitar maestro Mungal Patasar.

Not surprisingly, his music defies any attempt to fit it into a neat little box. This is one of his best loved tunes, recorded some time in the Eighties

nice one!!  big thanx  for the insight into the history!!!Been in jamaica recently doing a music video for Larry Mc Donald..was honoured to meet up with the pioneers like Mystic revelations,Sly and many more.

Can tell you all the giants are broke ass, cause some of them dont even know what happened to their music.Lets pay them the royalties the deserve.

When i spoke to some of them and told them how much airplay the music gets in europe they were suprice.

Keep the vibe alive

Now THAT, young sir, is a very long story. When Jamaica gained its independence in 1962 or so, it did not sign up to the Berne Convention on Copyright, but instead developed its own copyright law, devised by the producers, and awarding copyright to the OWNER of the sound recording. Result was that producers could pay singer a flat fee, then licence the tune worldwide, quite legally. Law was changed in 1994 I think, but all the great names of the sixties and seventies who didn't become producers themselves are bound to be ripped off blind by the previous laws

Thanx for the insight!!!! in my opinian reggae music is worth billions.. and why not the creators and pioneers  get paid what is due to them in full.

5% of the total value is asking for to much.

I was fortunate to Work Larry Mc donald,Sidney Mills,Karl Mc kloud and a historian like Herbi Miller, which i am sure you know!!!

sad state of affair that the poor artist gets the wrong end of the stick.

Reminds me of South -Africa my home country, after liberation it was advise by the imperial masters, to put the pass behind and move on..Damm no!!! justice and reperations...is due.
