Artist: Whuzi Album: Kitchen Sink

While checking out the latest offerings on okayplayer.com a few weeks ago I came across a comment by another member promoting a rapper I'd not heard of & they provided a link to his Myspace site. That rapper goes by the name of Whuzi from Tallahassee, FL. I checked out his site and was pleasantly surprised by the fresh sound he's bringing to the hip hop scene as an independant rap artist.

Whuzi doesn't have an album out as a solo artist though. It's supposed to be out sometime this coming Spring(which can't come fast enough!). I'm pretty particular about the hip hop & rap I listen to so for me to want a new artist's album to come out is saying something.

Whuzi's style is a literal 'Kitchen Sink'(the title of his upcoming album), with the biggest influence I hear as being Outkast but I'm sure you all will let me know what else you hear. There's definitely some old school influences too. He's got an unusual style, sound and flow but it all works VERY well. Check out his myspace page here.

Here is a video of a live performance of his other rap group After The Smoke(it kinda starts out rough & w/a corny skit but the actual songs are worth the wait):

I personally like Whuzi's solo tunes better but After The Smoke is pretty good too. But mark my words, Whuzi is destined to go places. And you heard it here FIRST!

The dude is definitely on his grind.  Music, graphic design, photography.  He's determined to get paid one way or another.

His 'space page is hot. Just from the illustrations you know this cat's got a little something different to offer. Really like the song "The Line"-as an aside, it's almost got a Euro dance feel to it. Good stuff, Aug.

Troy yea, he is definitely hard working. And he's still in college, in his senior year! What do you think of his music?

Britt his 'space page is hot. He's got creativity to spare! I like the fact that he's all over the place w/his music styles too. Glad you enjoyed.

Here's another installment of my 'I'm So Early '90's It Hurts'(ISENIH). (The red button will emit the song 'Summertime' for your listening convenience). Does anyone miss The Sundays as much as I do? Damn I miss them so much. It's been 11 years since their last cd release 'Static And Silence'(which I've been listening to alot lately), ELEVEN YEARS! Geezus! How could they let so much time go by w/o releasing another album?

But my all time favorite The Sundays song has to be their cover of 'Wild Horses'. It's such a romantical(yes, my best friend made that word up, so it is a word, heh) song & I actually prefer this version over The Rolling Stones original. It's funny, I didn't even know it was a cover until I heard The Stones version on the radio years after I bought the cd 'Blind' in '92. I first thought to myself 'when did The Stones make a cover of The Sundays song?' Then I realized I'd been duped by a wonderful song covered by The Sundays, haha.

The Sundays were a London, England band that started in the late '80s. Their first album 'Reading, Writing & Arithmatic' was in '90 here in the US('89 in the UK). The 'Blind' cd was released in '92 and 'Static And Silence' was in '97. Apparently the band is on hiatus due to raising their two children. But after 11 years, you'd think they raised their kids enough dontcha think? haha Sigh. . . oh well. Maybe they'll put out a reunion album some day.

Wow, August. I'm on your side, man. Dig the Sundays. But they ain't the Stones. Hard to grasp that there's someone born in the latter half of the 20th century who didn't know "Wild Horses" was a Stones song. I'm assuming that you never heard the Gram Parsons/Flying Burritos cover version either. If not, you must rectify. Since Parsons was a major influence on Mick and Keith as they composed and recorded "Wild Horses," it's no shock that G.P. almost outdoes the original himself.

I liked listening to this a lot.  Thanks.

About the widgets.  Have you tried refreshing after each change.  I noticed that I could get one change to hold, but not subsequent changes.  I move/change then refresh...then move/change again then refresh again.

Maybe I have the unnatural fascianation with widgets.  Let me know if that helps.

Mike I've enjoyed The Stones but never enough to buy an album. I have all 3 Sundays cds. And I grew up in bumfuck Portland, OR in the  '60s - '70s where the radio options were extremely limited.  So I'm still discovering songs that got played on radio everywhere else & most other people know. If it wasn't on the top 40 it didn't get played in Portland. Grrrrrr!

And no I haven't heard the G.P. version. Care to upload it to your page? Otherwise I won't look for it.

Annie were you familiar w/The Sundays? All 3 of their albums are posted on the dark side if you should want to hear more. And thanks for the tip on the widgets. But I don't think the refreshing will help the last songs played, top artists this week & recently added widgets. There's something more that's an issue w/those.

I don't think so. But I have my moments with Mr. Matthew Sweet. I haven't been much of a fan over the years but decided to pickup his "To Understand: The Early Recordings of Matthew Sweet" some years ago to see what his early songs sounded like(I think it was on clearance somewhere). I think I listened to it maybe twice(if that) & decided I didn't care much for the songs due to their sheer poppiness.

I tend to like MS's rockier songs generally but I can also recognize his songwriting brilliance even though I don't care for all his music. I've just found myself always wanting him to just freak the fuck out & rock but he doesn't cooperate very well with my wishes, lol.

So, I was listening to 'Girlfriend' in full for the first time the other day online(yes, I know, it's his quintessential album but I liked too many other artists that I wanted to spend my money on at the time) & predictably enjoying the rockier songs but really started listening to the other songs closely & realizing how well written they were. I then got into a convo with Sam The Butcher on the dark side & he was mentioning some b-sides & I thought they might be on his early comp. So I pulled the cd out & started listening to it again. I've done this so many times, revisiting a cd I thought I didn't like. And I found that my ears were far more open to it now & I've been enjoying the songs. There are some real gems on this.

One of my faves is this song from his 1989 'Earth' album. It's a shimmering, gorgeous bittersweet ballad that is reminiscent of The Hollies' 'Air That I Breathe' or The Byrds or some '60s, '70s pop group. It's quite a soaring, poetic song. Sure, the instrumentation isn't anything out of the ordinary but I like it quite a bit. It has sunny, melancholic vibes to it, kinda sorta!

So I guess this is my long winded response to Poebegone's post on not being ashamed of unabashed pop music.

Its funny, his voice sometimes really gets to me and other times I want nothing to do with it. I am still unsure how I feel about this song

I've never been into him either.  We had a friend from Wales that loved MS, like I love DCFC (see how I slipped that into the conversation.  I only do that now to get your goat).  Not one song, I've ever heard has struck a chord with me.

Bring it on MS lovers, show me the "sweet" side of MS.  Convert me...where should I start (if I should start at all)?  I really can take him or leave him.
